Pioneer unveils augmented reality heads up display for cars

One of the coolest scenes in the new Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol film involves Tom Cruise manipulating a map superimposed on the car’s windshield. It looked like science fiction but Pioneer just made it a reality.

Horizontal shower is like a car wash for human bodies

There a some inventions that really don’t need reinventing, and I would put the shower pretty high on that list. That hasn’t stopped German plumbing fixtures manufacturer Dornbracht from building the Horizontal Shower, which is kind of like the bastard stepchild of a bathtub and a shower rolled into one.

London cops want to suck your phone dry in an instant

The Met, London’s police force, is buying “mobile device data extraction” devices that can suck all the data out of your phone “in minutes” — that’s where you’ve been, who you know, what you’ve said to them, what websites you visit, and, depending on your apps, what groceries you buy, when you’ve called for a cab, what your menstrual cycle is, what you eat, your passwords, and so on. This is the police force that routinely DNA-swabbed suspects and refused to destroy the samples even after they were exonerated, despite being ordered to after a European high court ruling to the effect that this was illegal. Does anyone know what technology they’re buying, and what its limits are? I’d be interested in knowing if, for example, it is effective against the built-in Android mass storage encryption. “When a suspect is arrested and found with a mobile phone that we suspect may have been used in crime, traditionally we submit it to our digital forensic laboratory for analysis.” Kavanagh said the new system located within the boroughs themselves will enable “trained officers to examine devices and gives immediate access to the data in that handset”. He said: “Our ability to act on forensically-sound, time-critical information, from SMS to images contained on a device quickly gives us an advantage in combating crime, notably in terms of identifying people of interest quickly and progressing cases more efficiently.” Met Police uses ‘quick’ mobile data extraction system against suspects ( via /. )

Homemade Iron Man suit uses cardboard and fiberglass, looks amazing

Iron Man is frequently paid tribute by skilled costume makers (exhibits A , B and C ) — some who, like Mark Pearson, may have never known they had a little Stark in them. Maybe that’s because, as Pearson says: “…I like the fact that he is not really a superhero, he is just a man with a flying suit… But what a suit — it’s the Ferrari of superhero suits.”

What Say You, Thor?: Guy Builds Homemade Tesla Rifle

This is a video of a mad scientist (although he looks sort of happy in a “never learned how to smile” kinda way) showing off his homemade Tesla coil rifle . It’s a battery operated Tesla coil in the form factor of a rifle. Could you take down Thor with it? Not a chance. Could you give Magneto a boner with it? Every single time. One time he was over for tea when I accidentally put a spoon in the microwave and I could see his nipples get hard through his shirt. Hit the jump for a shot of it shooting lightning in the dark and and a video demo.

Cityscape rises from old pieces of movable type

“Type City” is an art installation by artist Hong Seon Jang. Jang’s taken pieces of movable type from an old printing press to build an impressive grey Gotham that at a glance one could mistake for an old black and white photo of New York.

Suck It, The Avengers!: A Justice League Movie Poster

Note: Full-size version HERE . This is a mock-up Justice League of America movie poster created by DeviantARTist daniel-morpheus in the style of the 1997 JLA Gallery cover by Frank Quitely, featuring some of the actors who have played the various characters in previous films and shows. It’s good, but I’m not sure how I feel about Justin Hartley as Aquaman. He’s just not — what’s the word I’m looking for? “Smexy enough.” YES. He’s just not smexy enough. Also, Green Lantern sucked and they should kill that guy off in the opening credits. Thanks to Wilmersama, who agrees Aquaman should definitely look less like a Backstreet Boy and more like a New Kid on the Block. Oh shi-shi, what you know about hangin’ tough?
