Note: Full res-version HERE because your desktop is itching for a new background. Ooooooooooor has porn fleas. This is AN ACTUAL PHOTOGRAPH of Saturn taken from the Cassini spacecraft that’s been orbiting the gas giant for the last seven years. Hard to believe, I know, but I just called NASA and they verified its authenticity. Granted they hung up on me when I started probing(!) about the aliens that live on the dark side of the moon , so it’s hard to say for sure. The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn drifted in giant planet’s shadow for about 12 hours in 2006 and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other. First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn, slightly scattering sunlight, in this exaggerated color image. Saturn’s rings light up so much that new rings were discovered, although they are hard to see in the image. Seen in spectacular detail, however, is Saturn’s E ring, the ring created by the newly discovered ice-fountains of the moon Enceladus and the outermost ring visible above. Far in the distance, at the left, just above the bright main rings, is the almost ignorable pale blue dot of Earth. Still hard to believe it’s real, isn’t it? Hey, I’m right here with you. I mean, in spirit. And let me tell you: even in spirit your B.O. is kickin’, son ! It’s called deodorant bro, it comes in sticks and sprays. “What about roll-on?” Okay now roll-on is only for the ladies. Astronomy Picture of the Day, In the Shadow of Saturn [nasa] Thanks to bb, who claims she’s roller-skated around Saturn’s rings like a ladybug around a shirt button. OMG THE IMAGERY!

This is a video from some POS ‘ reality ‘ wedding show that I’ll vehemently deny l’d ever watch (despite the fact that like 20% of my DVR is Bridezillas I can’t bring myself to delete because I might want to watch them again), featuring a creepy ring-bearing Gollum. Some show background, which I TOTALLY DID NOT copy/paste from the TLC website trying to find out what time it comes on: Every bride thinks she’s having the perfect wedding, but what if four brides agree to be guests at each other’s weddings to decide which is best? Tune into find out as these brides score each other’s big day for a fabulous honeymoon vacation prize. Anyway, some couple who obviously don’t understand the concept of winning decided it would be a good idea to have SOME CREEPY DUDE DRESSED UP (down?) AS GOLLUM come out of a pond to be the ring bearer. You really just have to see it to believe it. But one ring thing’s for sure: that shit was classy as a Mordorf***er. Hit the jump for more sexy than should be legal for a wedding ceremony.

Space: I’ve lived there. It was pretty cool. Never been to Saturn though, although I did regretfully visit Uranus once. Fine, TWICE. Just kidding — your butt’s mad nasty! This is a video fly-by of Saturn created from photos taken by the Cassini space probe. I watched it high. No, no I didn’t. I watched it holding my head between my hands praying I don’t puke again. Cassini has been snapping away photos ever since it was launched and recently, as part of an IMAX movie project called Outside In , some of these hi res images have been tweaked and cropped, and compiled into the short video above… For extra geek points, look out for the inspiration for the Death Star, Saturn’s moon Mimas and its Herschel Crater, clearly visible as Cassini flies over. Wait a minute — what the hell are geek points and why haven’t I heard of them? Can you trade them in for prizes? Can they be mined like Warcraft gold? Is there a website I can go to that tracks my total? I WANT ANSWERS. Ooooooor a handful of aspirin and a nap. Hit the jump and get ready to play outerspace (skip to the 1:00 mark for the good stuff).

Want a wedding band created using the same ‘mokume gane’ technique as authentic samurai swords ? You’re in luck! But also out of luck because you’re getting married . There’s only one way out of this: I’m gonna have to cut your ring finger off. Ready? HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-YA! *you bleeding* Perfect, looks like I got it right above the knuckle. Now let’s do the left hand. Mokume gane is…a metal working technique developed in Japan approximately three to four hundred years ago, in which two or more layers of metal are permanently joined together in alternating layers to form a stack (or billet). In the traditional Japanese technique the bond was achieved by diffusion welding of the layers in a charcoal forge. On this laminated billet patterns of the different colored alloys were created by a combination of cutting, twisting, and forging of the laminate in ways to expose the various layers. The patterned billet was then formed into finished work by applying standard forging and fabrication techniques. No word on price, but you know what they say, “If you have to ask, you’re obviously poor and security’s watching on CCTV to make sure you don’t steal anything.” Quick, pocket some throwing stars and run! James Binnion Metal Works Product Site via I’d Like My Ring Samurai Style [gizmodo] Thanks to Jake, who agrees the ring is definitely less mighty than the sword (the One Ring excluded of course).

Microsoft Game Studios Software Development Engineer Ray Arifianto’s soon-to-be wife had this custom USB wedding band made for him. Why? Because flash memory is the language of looooove. Psyche, it’s actually COBOL C++. The gold ring isn’t actually a functional USB drive, but its design is reminiscent of one. The interior is engraved with the words, “For a lifetime of memories,” an allusion to the USB’s storage capabilities. Aww! Shouldn’t it actually go on the thumb? Get it?! You know it’s a really beautiful thing when two people decide to share their lives together. Unfortunately, there’s something about me that sends all my relationships packing. BUT I THOUGHT WE SHARED SOMETHING SPECIAL! And I’m not just talking about clothes. Woman Gives USB Wedding Ring to Her Geeky Fianc [mashable] Thanks to Shenanigans, Blaqk Panda and Alex, who are all getting their significant others Firewire rings because they’re f***ing classy dudes.

The Gear Ring from Kinekt has functional gears in the middle that allow the bezel to rotate . And that’s pretty much it. No lasers or anything. They’re available in US sizes 9-12 for $165, and may need to be oiled from time to time. Not unlike the Tin Man! Who, fun fact: is not a robot. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still crush his ass on my face like an empty beer can, he just isn’t a robot. No laughing, Lion, you’re next. Hit the jump for a video of the ring in action (with bonus sausage pinky at 0:17!).
