Seen here giving the camera their best serious but cool, MIT researchers Andreas Velten and Ramesh Raskar pose in front of a Coke bottle filled with highlighter fluid or something. I don’t know, physics and I don’t always get along. That’s how I’m able to levitate . Just kidding, it’s magnets and wires. Anyway, these two studs have developed a means of capturing shots at 1/1,000,000,000,000th of a second, enabling photography of the movement of light itself. SU-SU-SU-SCIENCE!: Basically, nanosecond laser pulses are shone on an object. In front of the camera is a narrow slit, so that only a thin slice of the laser light can be seen at one time — the technical name for this device is a “streak camera.” The laser pulses, with very complex timing circuitry, are then picked up by an array of 500 sensors in the camera — but only one “scan line” at a time (thanks to the narrow slit). Using mirrors, the camera’s angle of view is changed over time until each of these one-dimensional slices can be built up into a complete 2D image. This process, which takes about an hour, has led to one of its creators — Ramesh Raskar — to dub this trillion-FPS wonder “the world’s slowest fastest camera.” There’s a video of the two creators explaining the technology after the jump that I was *this close* to being able to wrap my head around. Get it? Because my head is long like a jump rope. One time I even tripped a purse-snatcher, then used my head to tie him to a light pole until the cops arrived. True story 100% lies. Hit the jump and get your laser light photography show on.

Worst sex explanation ever. This is an hour-and-a-half interview between Stephen Colbert and famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson . There’s a lot of knowledge to be gained from watching it, so I suggest you make a pair of secret computer-viewing glasses tonight and come back to watch it at work tomorrow. Alternatively, just listen to it while you read blogs all day. But whatever you do, DON’T listen to it when you get home from work and start masturbating, or you’re gonna have a whole lot of explaining to do when your girlfriend walks in. Oh come on baby, it’s science . Like you’ve never diddled yourself watching PBS before! Hit the jump for the video, actual interview starts around 6:30.

If you haven’t already seen it, this is a video of a shitty high school science teacher dropping a goldfish in liquid nitrogen , then returning it to water where it “reanimates” itself. The goldfish survived due to the Leidenfrost Effect, which allowed this REAL scientist to dip his hand in liquid nitrogen and it not break off and shatter (follow that link for more info). So my question is this, Special Ed — if you believe in science so much, why’d you use a goldfish instead of your own hand ? I’ll tell you why — because you’re a sissy. ADMIT IT — ADMIT YOU DON’T EVEN BELIEVE IN SCIENCE! *teacher sobbing* “It’s all true — the drama department was overstaffed!” Hit the jump for the that was entirely unnecessary.

This is a small series of physics (NOT chemistry ) themed cupcakes created by a young baker to celebrate their last day of high school physics class . Me? I skipped school and went to the bong store, then drank Mad Dog 20/20’s in a public park with a couple of my bros from show choir. So yeah, physics themed cupcakes — there’s only one thing better: an entire physics themed CAKE cake. Get it? Because it’s so much bigger . And bigger always = better when you’re as fat as I am. Hit the jump for a closeup of the black-hole one. “I’m going to eat you now, planets!” “Oh no, please don’t eat us!” “TOO BAD, GOBBLE GOBBLE!”

This is a patent from 1963 for a device that’s supposed to make birthing easier by practically shooting babies out of vaginas with the helpful hand of centrifugal force . Basically a woman is strapped into this thing, it starts spinning like mad, and she projectile vomits for a while until PRESTO! a baby comes flying out like a circus clown out of a cannon. Thankfully, the newborn is caught by a special baby-catching net (DO NOT FORGET TO ATTACH THE NET!) between the woman’s legs and the apparatus immediately shuts down. Wow, and to think 50-years later this isn’t the standard practice. WHY YOU LADIES GOTTA HATE ON SCIENCE?! Apparatus For Facilitating The Birth Of A Child By Centrifugal Force [googlepatents] Thanks to Dot.AY, who heard water-births are where it’s at. EVIAN BABIES FTW!

This isn’t particularly NEW news because we mentioned it back in 2006 when you weren’t even kneehigh to a tadpole yet, but we’ve got video this time. And video, as you may well know, are the words of the future . So yeah, a Japanese pool that can create shapes out of waves. That’s a kidney there. *whispering* Okay, my producer just told me this isn’t a kidney, it’s a heart. Haha, actually — it may in fact be a pancreas. It uses computer-controlled actuators that move the water in perfect synchronization. The computer software uses fluid dynamics algorithms to calculate the necessary motions. The whole think looks like a computer rendering, but it’s real. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Finally, a way to write love letters to Ariel without smearing the ink! She, uh — she still can’t talk, right? Hit for a worthwhile video of the magic in action.

Note: No matter how many times you try clicking the picture, nothing’s going to happen. Hit the jump to watch the video. “GW, that has got the be the most boring-ass screencap of all time”. OH COME ON, IT LOOKS LIKE HOTH ! “Yeah well your face looks like a Wampa “. Ouch, you are being really mean to me today. And I like it. I don’t know if you knew this about me, but I’m a masochist. It’s true, I can’t even get off anymore unless I’ve been shot . OH SHIT — a wild tie-in appeared! Apparently, Mythbusters is going to film a segment to test the incredible case of the spinning bullet on ice. Many people are discussing if this is possible or not. After watching it repeatedly and reading the arguments, I believe it. Some people say that this is impossible. How can a .40 caliber bullet stop on the ice like that, losing all its forward momentum and still keep spinning? I don’t know the what the physics are, but the video is pretty clear and I don’t see any way of faking that, which is probably why Mythbusters is going to put it to the test. I watched the video in question several times, and it looks legit. Then, because I’m such an intrepid reporter, I searched Youtube for other people trying it, whose attempts also seemed legit. But that’s not important, what’s important is how many people are gonna shoot themselves trying it. I suspect in the tens. Hit it for the WTFery.

This is some French guy making a little superconductor train out of a bunch of magnets and a cup of magic potion . I have no idea what’s in the magic potion but that won’t stop me from chugging a whole chalice in the hopes of floating. Plus, it even works upside down which is super cool because I’ve always wanted to take a nap on the ceiling. I will drool on you! This guy got the Born Oppenheimer Approximation, 3-D Schrdinger Equation and Schrdinger Equation’s solution permanently inked on his back . Well, what do you think? Because I’d hit that like a Higgs boson . MEOW! Uh-oh, Schrdinger Cat — it’s out of the bag! Does this Physics Tattoo Make this Man the Biggest Nerd on Earth or Hottest Geek Alive? [gizmodo] Thanks to Sarah, who said she’d do him like a school marm. I don’t even know what that means, Sarah, but I think I want in.
