Slotted power strip should be how all power strips are designed

This ingenious power strip design swaps out holes for slots, allowing you to slide your plugs right up next to each other, saving all sorts of space. Why hasn’t someone thought of this sooner?

How do you like the new commenting system on DVICE?

In case you haven’t noticed, for the past couple of weeks DVICE has been using a new system to record your comments on the site. We’d like to know: what do you think of the change? A quick rundown: The new system gives you the option to log in via your Facebook account, and comments appear quicker than they did under the previous system (at least they should). We’ve also reversed the order of comments so the most recent ones appear at the top. On top of that, the design and fonts have changed, plus we’ve revamped the captcha system, which often didn’t work. So what you think? Is the new system working well, or is it not so good? What do you think about it, and what would you like to see changed? Please vote in the poll below, and let us know in, uh, the comments.

These desks hide a secret of auto-raising flat screens

Now this is a desk. By day, it’s your standard-issue desk, perfect for taking notes on or reading at. By night? It raises a slew of flat-panel monitors in unison like some sort of ancient ceremony. The desks, made by furniture maker KI, are clearly designed for places like schools, but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t install one for yourself if you really wanted to. And why wouldn’t you really want to? Via Boing Boing

A kit for burglars: questionably legal, surprisingly effective

For a mere $200, you can buy this Burglary Kit, full of stuff to help you break and enter anywhere you please. But just how effective is the stuff inside? Crowbar: A standard item in any kit, you’ll need this to do the physical breaking and entering. Effective! Ski Mask: You don’t want the cameras to reveal your identity, do you? Effective! Leather Gloves: Fingerprints are the last thing you want to leave all over the scene of the crime. Effective! Rope: Of course, you need rope for scaling walls and tying up guards. Effective! First Aid Kit: Unless you’re really clumsy, you hopefully won’t need a first aid kit during a burglary. Why let it weigh you down? Not effective! Disposable Camera: Unless you want to create evidence of your crimes, you’ll probably want to leave the camera at home. Not effective! Small Knife: A bigger knife would probably be better, but I’m not gonna advocate violence, so I’ll just say this is Effective enough! Chicklets: Wait, gum? Uh, why? Not effective! You can buy the whole kit, effective items and non-effective items, for $200 now. Partners and Spade via Uncrate

Brilliant solar pendulum can start from a standstill

I love seeing cool science made real with clever tricks. This pendulum can be started from a standstill, but when out in the sun will start itself swinging back and forth, faster and faster, without being touched. How does it work? A solar panel at the top sends a little bit of juice to some coils in the base. Those coils then send the magnet in the pendulum moving back and forth. As it keeps swinging, it picks up momentum. And there’s even enough juice left over to power a small LED light at the top. The whole thing is a homemade project, too, which makes it all the more awesome. Science! Accomplished via Make

This clock wakes you up AND makes you tea

There are coffee people and there are tea people. For those tea people, they can’t start their days until they’ve had their mug. And with this tea-making alarm clock , they can cut the time between waking up and having their tea down to as short a period as possible. This clever contraption brews you a cup of tea a few minutes before its alarm goes off. That way, when you hear the annoying beeping, that feeling of stress is immediately offset by the smell of hot tea. It’s just one small push towards starting your day off on the right foot. The clock is available now for about $88. MenKind via Coolest Gadgets

Sony’s Twitter device for cats: have they lost it?

Hooo-kay, Sony. Your new device that allows cats to have their very own Twitter feed? I don’t get it. Here’s how it works: it’s a little box that hangs around kitty’s neck. It has a camera, an acceleration sensor and a GPS receiver on board. It keeps tabs on what the cat is doing, be it eating, running around, sleeping or hanging out with other cats. It then sends out one of 11 set texts via Bluetooth to a computer than then posts it to the cat’s Twitter feed. The messages are presumably things like “Meowsers, I’m eating right now!” or “My owner is a sad and lonely person!” There’s no word on when this thing is being released, if ever, but it should sell better than the Sony Rolly in any case.
