THE FUTURE IS NOW: iPhone App Provides Instant Video Translations Of Foreign Signs

Word Lens is a $5 iPhone app that provides a streaming translation of whatever you’re pointing your phone at (i.e. road signs , menus, etc). It’s pretty much the technology of the future because, let’s not kid ourselves, no child born after 2000 will bother learning any language but text-talk . Isn’t that right you little dipshits?! At the moment, the app only translates words from Spanish to English and vice-versa. Imagine how language barriers will crumble when we get Chinese, French and German to English. There’s a video demo of the technology after the jump that looks pretty amazing provided it’s real and not all smoke and mirrors. And speaking of smoke and mirrors — meth and coke, amirite?! No, I’m not — drugs are bad. Except alcohol, which shouldn’t even be considered a drug as much as it should be added to the bottom of the food pyramid. *ahem* FDA . YOU APPROVED BONER PILLS! Hit the jump for a 1:00 demo.

Little Girl Gets Hand Cut Off, Grafted To Foot

Nine-year-old Ming Li is just like any other little Chinese girl. Except she has to walk to school uphill both ways and still got run over and her hand cut off by a tractor . At the time, her arm was in such poor shape reattaching the hand was an impossibility. Thankfully, quick-thinking doctors were able to graft it to her foot while her arm healed, and successfully reattach it 3-months later. MODERN MEDICAL MAGIC! Dr Hou Jianxi, spokesman for the hospital in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, said the hand had now been transplanted back on to her arm. “When she came in, her left hand was completely severed from her body. It was very scary,” he told the Zhoukou Evening Post. “But Ming Li can now move her wrist again and her left hand is a healthy pink colour proving that the blood is circulating well.” Li will need two more operations over the next year. One to improve her hand functions and some plastic surgery to remove her scars. But Dr Hou said: “After surgery, and with plenty of physiotherapy, we are confident her left hand will be capable of doing most things. Amazing, I love a story with a happy ending. Huh? DAMMIT PERV — GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE GUTTER! Get well soon, Ming. And remember, tractors: not the toys Matchbox would lead you to believe. Girl’s hand grafted on to her leg [orange] via Severed Hand Reattached -Three Months Later [neatorama] Thanks to Hankzor411, who once taped a Nerf gun to his arm and pretended he was Mega Man. That’s, uh, pretty sad I’m not gonna lie.

Musical Magic!: Boombox Optical Illusion

Note: Video of the trickery after the jump. This is an image of a boombox created out of cassette tape that only looks like a boombox when viewed from the proper angle . Otherwise it just looks like a bunch of metallic rat turds strewn across a kitchen floor. That said, I watched the whole minute-long video at least four times, and not just because I’m convinced I caught a gimpse of that girl’s underwear when she was getting into position, but I am gonna watch it at least six more times just to makes sure. Hit it for the trickery in action.

Shaming The Caterpillars: Carved Leaf Art

Carved leaf art is exactly what it sounds like: actual leaves carved into art. Or — OR — actual art carved into leaves . Either way, my hands are far too shaky to ever attempt anything like this. And that’s not just my drinking problem talking, although of course it is because that f***er never shuts up. “BEER ME! Wait, wait — take a shot first. ” Natural leaf carving is actual manual cutting and removal of a leaf’s surface to produce an art work on a leaf. The process of carving is performed by artists using tools to carefully remove the surface without cutting or removing the veins. The veins add detail into the subject matter of the carving. The material or most common leaf used in leaf carving is the leaf of a Chinar tree. The Chinar tree is native to India, Pakistan and China. Chinar leaves have a close resemblance to maple leaves. Chinar trees, huh? Are those anything like Americar trees? No? Russiar trees? Because I heard in Russia (you already saw this coming from a mile away, didn’t you?) trees cut you down. But Zangief already has low self-esteem! Hit the jump for five more of the holy shit that’s some hand/eye coordination.

Mashup!: Futurama Characters As X-Mens

Note: This pic is small and doesn’t do the piece justice so to see the whole thing click CHEER . Oh shit, oh shit — spirit fingers! DeviantARTist gottabecarl went and mashed the Futurama and X-Men universes together. This is what he got. Oh really — then what about the superpowers you’re not telling us about?! ARE YOU X-RAY VISIONIN’ MY NIPPLES RIGHT NOW?! You wanna? A friend of mine suggested one day that it would be cool to see the characters of Futurama as X-Men and so I drew him Fry as Cyclops. For some reason I couldn’t just stop there…and what came of it was a pretty extensive illustration with some of the most obscure characters from both the X-Men and Futurama universes. Great job, Carl. It’s times like these I wish God would have given me some sort of artistic talent. But alas, all I got was a face that could make Adonis cry and a wiener that NASA wants to use as a ladder to the moon. Still, I wish I could draw. Carl’s deviantART Thanks to Martin, who once mashed Batman and Robin together and got, well, Batman and Robin rubbing twinkies.
