Sony’s WhiteMagic LCD doubles brightness with pure white pixels

Through the magic of science or optics or something, LCD screens are able to create white light by mixing other colors of light. This works fine, but not being satisfied with “fine,” Sony has gone and added an entirely new pixel of pure whiteness, which can double a screen’s brightness or make it twice as efficient, but not both at the same time.

For some reason, audiophiles are willing to spend tons of money on things that are very obviously not worth it. More than almost any other product category, high-end audio accessories tend towards the ridiculous. Case in point: this $650 “vibration neutralizer.”

Eerie pirate ship home theater is Jack Sparrow-approved

Why are people so obsessed with pirates and pirate ships these days? We haven’t a clue, but dang it, this Pirates of the Caribbean -themed home theater in Palm Beach, Florida would make tolerating Johnny Depp’s corny Jack Sparrow jokes a whole lot more pleasant.

These teardrop/eye shaped speakers will set you back

There’s a general rule in the high-end speakers game: the weirder a speaker looks, the more ridiculous the promises of sound fidelity and the more astronomical the price. And judging by the looks of these Figaro speakers, they’re gonna be reeeeeal expensive.

Panasonic has 100GB triple-layer Blu-ray discs, but who cares

Yeah, I guess cramming 100 gigs onto a triple-layer rewritable Blu-ray disc is nice, but seriously, what’s the point? Physical media is a terrible idea , especially right now, when the future is all in the cloud.

Boy, are people who spent all sorts of money on a 3D TV that requires glasses going to feel foolish before too long. With advances like Samsung’s 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV, those glasses are going to become very expensive paperweights.

Newly updated FiOS iPhone app lets you set your DVR from afar

Maybe it’s being trapped with Cablevisions uniquely terrible DVR that makes me pine so hard over a DVR iPhone app, but damn does FiOS’s new offering look slick.
