Geert Matthys, research and development manager at Barco , a Belgian company specializing in high-definition projectors and displays, gives an explanation inside a fully immersive 360-degree flight simulator in Kuurne October 11, 2011. Barco has unveiled what company executives claim is the ultimate fighter jet training tool designed to reproduce reality exactly as a pilot sees it. The dome is the first flight simulator to give trainee pilots a full 360-degree view of the world as they conduct virtual missions, said Barco. More photos below . Related story here at Reuters . WARNING: Spider face. Ever wonder what the face of a 49-million year old spider trapped in amber might look like? You’re nasty! God , why can’t you just imagine a naked celebrity or something like a normal person? Your family: you have shamed them, shamed them bad. University of Manchester researchers, working with colleagues in Germany, created the intricate images using X-ray computed tomography to study the remarkable spider, which can barely be seen under the microscope in the old and darkened amber. Writing in the international journal Naturwissenscaften, the scientists showed that the amber fossil — housed in the Berlin Natural History Museum — is a member of a living genus of the Huntsman spiders (Sparassidae), a group of often large, active, free-living spiders that are hardly ever trapped in amber. “The results were surprising,” Penney said. “Computed tomography produced 3D images and movies of astounding quality, which allowed us to compare the finest details of the amber fossil with similar-looking living spiders. Hey, whatever gets me closer to some dinosaur-cloning DNA, I’m down. You think I don’t already have a secluded tropical island ready for my Jurassic Park? Hell no, those things are f***ing expensive! I figured I’d just raise a couple smaller ones my closet and take it from there. Hit the jump for a pretty cool video of the 3-D reconstruction of Charlotte.

Well folks, don’t bother marking your calendars , because February 10, 2012 is the date you can go stuff another $16 in George Lucas’ moneygrubbing pocket to see Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3-D . If you’re lucky, maybe on the way to the local cineplex you’ll have a flashback to 1999 when you were excitedly going to see the original without realizing GEORGE WAS ABOUAT TO DROP A GIANT STINKING TURD RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES. Aaaaand hopefully that’ll prevent you from seeing it this time. If not, there’s this picture of Darth Maul in 3-D glasses. It’s the best part of the movie. Get it? BECAUSE IT DOESN’T F***ING EXIST. Suck it, George. Gobble that Gungan wiener. 3D Version of ‘Star Wars’ Gets a Release Date [thewrap] and Picture Thanks to everyone who sent this, like I don’t have a shit-radar or something.

Remember when Hustler announced they were making a 3-D parody of Avatar and it was gonna be the company’s most costly production to date? Well it looks like the number to beat was $200, because this thing looks like a giant Na’vi turd. And not a golden one like that goose in the fairy tale lays, oh no — I’m talking about a stinking pile an elephant wouldn’t even come near for fear of never forgetting. You see, elephants can’t booze like we can, which is why they have such good memories. Also, why I never want to come back as an elephant. SFW trailer for the POS after the jump.

Note: Video is after the jump because the background music is kinda depressing and I didn’t want to bring everybody down on the main page. This is a video documenting the lives of four World of Warcraft players as portrayed by their avatars as the go about their day-to-day activities . It’s really artfully done. Not unlike the nude shots I just had taken. Kidding, those were pure smut. This is short film directed by Gavin Kelly we worked on a while ago called “Avatar Days”. What makes this one special is the fact that it was filmed, vfx’ed and comped all in just 4 days. It was made as part of the “4 day Film” catagory in the Darklight Film Festival. It follows 4 MMORPG players taking about their online persona’s. As they tell their stories we see them go about their everyday lives against the mundane backdrop of city life…but as their Avatars. Cool, now they just need to make a movie about me and my avatar. Just sayin’, you ever seen a Link lookalike stare at a computer 14 hours a day? SUMMER. F***ING. BLOCKBUSTER. Hit it for the video.

This a computer model of Jesus’ face using information from the blood on the Shroud of Turin to create the image. He looks like somebody I know. The image has been created for the History Channel’s upcoming special, “The Real Face of Jesus,” which is set to air next week. Ray Downing, president of Studio Macbeth, explains how they recreated the “real” face of Jesus to the NY Post: “We ‘lifted’ the blood and isolated it [on the computer],” he said, ’so that would sit ‘in air’ [on a transparent background].” Interesting, Ray, but I’ve seen the “real” face of Jesus, and it didn’t require any technical computer mumbo-jumbo. No, it came to me in Flamin’ Hot Cheeto form and I ate the whole bag except for his face without getting diarrhea . There’s no doubt it was a miracle. The “Real Face of Jesus” (PHOTO) Revealed?! [postchronicle] Thanks to Pete, who once saw the face of God in a cloud before getting struck by lighting. Geez, you can’t look directly at him, Pete! Don’t you remember the Nazis in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’?

Ten years ago, much of the excitement at CES and in Hollywood involved the possibilities of digital cinema and television. This week in Vegas, it’s all about 3D . Sony CEO Howard Stringer described it as ” the next great consumer experience ,” and was joined on stage by previously Kanye-bashed pop star Taylor Swift, whose performance was then streamed live in 3D . Earlier this week, Sony announced a joint venture with Discovery Communications and IMAX to create a new 24-hour 3D channel, to launch next year . ESPN promises to use Sony pro HD cameras to capture sporting events for a new 3D sports channel which will launch in June, coinciding with the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Sony, Samsung , LG and Toshiba all unveiled 3D HDTVs, and related 3D offerings. But Panasonic’s VT25 flat-screen HDTVs will actually include the funny glasses . The Panasonic press conference Wednesday opened with a live broadcast from Osaka, Japan, of company president Fumio Ohtsubo, using an HD visual communications system. ” How do I look? ,” his high-def streamed likeness asked the audience. He then introduced Panasonic’s new $21,000 HD 3D pro camcorder : two lenses and a camera head integrated into one body. More on the Panasonic 3D hub . Fujfilm announced a handful of new shooters, including the S200EXR, a quasi-SLR with a 12 megapixel sensor, 14.3x optical zoom, and the capability of shooting 30fps video, as well as both RAW and JPEG. The prosumer S200EXR is relatively lightweight (835g) and is said to boast 50% more battery life than comparable models in its arsenal, meaning you supposedly get 370 shots per battery charge. Whenever I hear stats like that, I tend to picture a cramped room of gnomes, ashy butts dangling from their mouths, miserably pressing camera shutters and counting. And counting… The S200EXR will be available in August for $600. Whatever, just give me my 3D camera already. Please and thanks. Fujifulm’s forthcoming 3D point-and-shoot camera uses two lenses, spaced about as far apart as a pair of human eyes, to create its effect. Named the FinePix Real3D, it simply takes two photos simultanously, which can then be presented together using either a special 3D picture frame, or prints that use an overlay acting as a 3D lens.
